Workspace Templates

VDMX includes a powerful templating system that makes it possible save and reload reusable setups that include the settings of all the current layers and plugins in your workspace.

For situations where you only need to capture / restore the state of an individual plugin you can use Plugin Templates for a more narrow templating scope.

Note that Workspace Templates do not include the media files loaded in the current project, they are primarily meant to be used as starting points that different sets of media can be loaded into. The contents of individual pages can be exported by using the 'Export Selected Pages...' option when right-clicking on a page.

Loading Workspace Templates

Existing Workspace Templates can be loaded by selected the desired option from the Templates menu in VDMX.

The selected template will completely override any layers, plugins and window arrangement, but will not have any effect on the media files that are loaded or any presets stored with your current project file.

Some particularly useful templates to try out when just getting started with VDMX include:

  • Simple Player: A single layer of video with a large media bin, a preview window and FX.
  • Simple Mixer: A simple two channel mixer setup with preview window and media bins.
  • Syphon Player: A single layer of video that is published to Syphon.
  • 4 Layer VJ Starter: An arrangement of 4 layers, each with its own media bin, preview window and source / FX controls.

Some examples that demonstrate useful techniques in VDMX include:

  • Audio Spectrogram Example: Demo of using the Audio Analysis plugin to create an audio spectrogram visualizer.
  • Chroma Key Example: Shows how to composite layers for green / blue screen footage.
  • Dual Screen Example: Shows how to set up the canvas and layers for output to two screens.
  • Triple Screen Example: Shows how to set up the canvas and layers for output to three screens.

Other included templates include sample layouts for working with specific MIDI controllers such as the APC Mini, APC 20 and Korg nanoKontrol.

Creating Workspace Templates

New Workspace Templates can be created by using the "Create Template From Workspace" option in the Templates menu.

Managing Templates

Adjusting the metadata for Workspace Templates in the Template Manager window.

Existing templates can be added, deleted or updated by using the "Manage Templates..." option in the Templates menu.

Sharing or Manually Installing Templates

Template files can be found by going to the Help menu and choosing the "Show Assets Folder in Finder" option. These files can be shared with other VDMX users, who can place them in the corresponding folder on their own computer or go to "~/Library/Application Support/VDMX/VDMX6 templates".
